A Local’s Guide to Family-Friendly Beaches

St Thomas, US Virgin Islands

Is your family visiting St Thomas, US Virgin Islands and you’re looking for the best beaches to take your kids? Check out my list below!

I have lived in St Thomas for the past 7 years and I’m raising my two little ones here. I’ve put together an easy guide of activities and beaches to enjoy with your kids on your St Thomas adventure.

The U.S. Virgin Islands consist of St Thomas, St John, Water Island, and St Croix (30 miles south of St Thomas). Both St John and Water Island are easy day trips from St Thomas and I highly recommend both.

Note: if you are traveling with your family, I recommend having your own car. Taxis can be expensive as they charge per person, do not have car seats, and you have to rely on their schedule to get around. Check out available cars here.

The Most Family Friendly Beaches on St Thomas:

Brewers Beach

Pros:

  • This is a locals beach so it tends to be less crowded.
  • You will see turtles here, guaranteed.
  • The water is shallow and usually calm so it’s good for kids to splash
  • Bathrooms available and outdoor showers for rinsing
  • It is right next to the airport so you can watch airplanes take off and land all day
  • Parking

Cons:

  • Limited food available. There are a few food trucks that offer beverages and small menus. Cash only.

Magen’s Bay

Pros:

  • One of the most beautiful beaches and top tourist destinations
  • Activities available like kayaking or paddle boards
  • Large beach with space to spread out from the crowd
  • Concessions and bar available
  • Lounge chairs available for rent
  • Restrooms and showers available
  • Shallow water good for young kids
  • Parking

Cons:

  • Crowded
  • You have to swim out for snorkeling
  • Entrance Fee (children under 12 are free).

Secret Harbor

Pros:

  • Shallow, calm water (this is almost a guarantee because of the bay)
  • Excellent snorkeling
  • Swim dock to jump off
  • Restaurant & bar
  • Foot showers & Bathrooms
  • Quiet, relaxing beach especially in off-season
  • Parking, but it can fill up

Cons:

  • Smaller beach so it can feel crowded
  • Lounge chairs are for Secret Harbor condo guests only
  • Not the best beach for sand toys

Sapphire Beach

Pros:

  • Restaurants, coffee shop, and bar
  • Bathroom & Showers
  • Great views of St John & British Virgin Islands
  • Lounge chairs available for rent
  • Water activities available
  • Ample parking
  • Nice snorkeling

Cons:

  • 3 condo/ resort communities on the property so it can be crowded
  • Parts of the beach are rocky to enter

Honeymoon Beach, Water Island

Want to check out other islands? Water Island is a great day trip, just a quick 10 minute ferry ride from Crown Bay Marina.

Why we said "No" to the Good and the Beautiful Language Arts for Kindergarten and First Grade
In this video, I’m sharing my honest fears as a mom new to homeschooling. From deschooling myself to worrying about balance, losing my "me time," and the pressure to make everything magical — am I crazy for going down this path?!

I see all the shiny, beautiful homeschool videos on YouTube and wonder… what if my homeschool journey is just a hot mess?

If you're feeling overwhelmed or unsure about homeschooling too, you’re not alone.

Chime in below — what’s your biggest homeschooling fear right now?

New here? I’m an island mom homeschooling my little ones and figuring it out one day at a time.
Will Homeschool Just Be a Hot Mess? | Confessions on Deschooling, Expectations & Losing "Me" Time
Hey everyone! Welcome back! 👋
In today’s video, I’m breaking down the exact steps (using ChatGPT, Curriculum websites, Facebook, and YouTube) I took to choose our homeschool curriculum for the 2025–2026 school year.

📌 My ChatGPT Prompt (feel free to copy and tweak!):
“I would like to create a homeschooling pod for kindergarten and first graders. There will be individual subjects like math and language arts and group subjects like social studies and science. It can be religious but I do not want to teach religious content. I would like to focus on human kindness and emotional intelligence at this age instead. We will incorporate cooking, gardening, and we also have chickens and a yard for the kids to play in. It can have online components, but it will not be an online curriculum. We can pay for the curriculum. Please incorporate math, language arts, social studies, art, science. We have visual learners as well as kinesthetic learners.”
